Staff Attorney

Overview:
The Alaska office of Earthjustice is seeking applications for a staff attorney position.  Issues facing the Alaska office are ever-changing and currently include

  • the protection of the Tongass National Forest,
  • protecting America's Arctic Ocean,
  • protecting habitat and water quality for the impact of large scale mine proposals,
  • and limit impact of large trawl fisheries to protect imperiled marine mammals and birds including the Steller sea lion and northern fur seal, and
  • protecting the Western Arctic from expanding oil and gas leasing and exploration.

Our office is located in a small older house in Juneau, Alaska. There are seven attorneys and three support staff. For the right candidate, we may consider locating the job in Anchorage, Alaska.

Responsibilities:
The staff attorney will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and pursuing strategic litigation in federal and state courts. We seek applicants with the requisite experience, excellent legal research and writing skills, strong self-motivation, an ability and willingness to work closely with others, and a commitment to environmental protection. Timely admission to the Alaska bar is essential.

Qualifications:
We are looking for a candidate who has

  • five or more years experience in environmental law or general litigation;
  • the ability to manage a litigation docket independently,
  • a demonstrable passion for enforcing and strengthening environmental laws, and
  • references that can speak to your experience providing clients with the best legal representation and related advocacy.
