SUMMER LAW CLERK OPPORTUNITIES

`A`ohe pau ka `ike i ka halau ho`okahi.

All knowledge is not taught in the same school.

Earthjustice opened an office in Honolulu in 1988 to protect natural and cultural resources throughout Hawai`i and the mid-Pacific region. Earthjustice Honolulu is the only non-profit environmental law firm in the state of Hawai`i. Earthjustice Honolulu works with local and national groups to protect fragile marine and island ecosystems, and to restore water, environmental and cultural rights to local and Native Hawaiian communities using the law and community advocacy.

Earthjustice Honolulu is looking for law clerks who have excellent research, writing and oral advocacy skills; solid academic records; demonstrated commitment to the environment; the ability to be a team player; strong work ethic, sense of initiative, and sound judgment. A sense of humor is also desired. Summer law clerks are expected to work at least ten weeks. Applications from second-year law students are generally favored, but applications from first year law students will be considered.

Summer law clerks participate as full members of our staff and are expected to perform legal and factual research, draft research memoranda and legal documents, attend court hearings and client meetings, participate in press conferences, and other activities as our case load demands. These are paid positions; however, we ask applicants to apply for work study, grants, and fellowships to supplement the budget amount that we have available.

Qualified candidates should send a cover letter, resume, list of three references (at least one from a law school professor), college and law school transcripts (unofficial copies are sufficient), and a writing sample (preferably a legal memorandum or brief) by email to honoluluoffice@earthjustice.org.  Emails are encouraged to cut down on paper waste.

As an alternative you may apply by mail using double sided copies to:

Isaac Moriwake

Earthjustice, Honolulu Office

223 South King Street

Honolulu, HI 96813-4501.

APPLICATION DEADLINE for summer is December 1, but applications are accepted starting from September 1, and early decisions can be made on a case-by-case basis.

Earthjustice offers equal opportunity without regard to age, gender, race, ethnic background, disability, or sexual orientation. We strongly encourage applications from candidates who will add to the diversity of our staff.
