Our Stories

Staff members tell their personal stories of fighting for the environment with Earthjustice.

An Act of Will
You often hear it said that the public, by a massive majority, supports environmental protection -- until it comes to money. If saving a creature, for example, is going to cost a lot of money, conventional wisdom says to forget it. What you don’t often hear about is people who are avid and generous environmental supporters and keep quiet about it. Such a man was Milton Field. A few years ago, while she still worked for Earthjustice, Alison Levine wrote his story.

She Went For It And Won
Former Earthjustice Executive Director Buck Parker recalls how a stroll along the San Francisco waterfront -- and a dare -- led to the transformation of a decrepit shoreline into a rare urban nature space.

Harvesting Peace From War
Years ago, the U.S. Army seized Makua Valley on O'ahu for training and other uses. Earthjustice attorney David Henkin represented Native Hawaiian people trying to stop damage to cultural sites in the valley. Here's his story of an inspiring celebration.

No Nonsense Judge Vs. EPA
After the Environmental Protection Agency failed to impose strict air quality standards in the Washington, DC area, Earthjustice attorney David Baron sued to force a showdown between the EPA and a no-nonsense judge. Here's his story of what happened.

Louisiana Town Thwarts Nuclear Plant
Tom Turner recounts a David-and-Goliath struggle between impoverished African-Americans in rural Louisiana and a mighty international consortium of government agencies and private companies bent on siting a uranium enrichment plant in their midst.

A Legal Lake of Poison Above Yellowstone
The gold mining company had a legal -- but horrific -- plan to put cyanide-laden waste in a reservoir on an earthquake fault just above Yellowstone National Park. But Earthjustice attorney Doug Honnold had another idea, recounts Earthjustice Editor-At-Large Tom Turner.

Be Wary -- Very -- Of Scientists
"Given that we were traveling with two top grizzly bear scientists, it's amazing that we did everything you're not supposed to do in grizzly bear country." Tim Preso, Earthjustice attorney in Montana, recounts a grizzly bear adventure in Yellowstone National Park.

A Clean Air Movement Grows in California's Central Valley
International Press Secretary Brian Smith recounts how a unique coalition came together to fight for cleaner air.

A Snake in the Kitchen
Attorney Monica Reimer represented denizens of Old Florida in the only jury trial in Earthjustice history. As she recalls here, it was them against chainsaws and barbed wire in a fight over the soul of south Florida's Fisheating Creek.

Wan Bao -- The Environmentalist
Parents and children don't often see eye to eye, especially when they grow up in different cultures. Marketing Manager Ray Wan recalls his mother's reaction when he decided to major in environmental science.

An Upstream Legal Battle
West Coast salmon runs are again on the verge of collapse, 20 years after Earthjustice attorney Mike Sherwood led groundbreaking legal efforts to save winter-run Chinook salmon from the effects of Shasta Dam. In the context of today’s continuing battles, Mike recalls how he and Earthjustice first entered the fray.
