Boiling Point
by Ross Gelbspan
Basic Books, 2004
Ross Gelbspan is mad. Mad at politicians who won't take the threat of global warming seriously enough, mad at the media (he's a Pulitzer-prizewinning journalist) for underreporting the story, mad at environmental organizations for being too willing to compromise, and really mad at Big Oil and Big Coal. If you have any doubts left as to the severity of the problem, this is the book for you. It is easy reading, very alarming -- but in the end very hopeful. For Gelbspan, the bottom line is that civilization must reduce its consumption of fossil fuels by at least 70 percent -- and that doing so will make the earth a happier, more secure, more just place for everyone.
