Laws Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada
by John Muir Laws
Heyday Books , 2007
![]() |
$24.95, 366 pages I can't imagine a more useful guidebook to take on your next trip into the Sierra Nevada. This guide, a joint project of Heyday Books and the California Academy of Sciences, has sections on fungi and lichens; trees, shrubs, vines, and herbs; wildflowers; spiders, insects, and other small animals; fish; amphibians and reptiles; birds; mammals; and animal tracks, galls, weather, and stars. There are illustrations of all the entries, and useful suggestions on how to find what you're looking for. The paintings are not quite up to the amazing bird ilustrations of David Sibley, but they're more than adequate and this book packs more information into a reasonable space than any other I've seen. --Tom Turner
