How Green is Your City?

by Warren Karlenzig
New Society Publishers, 2007

It's certainly no surprise that the crew at SustainLane found Portland, Oregon, the most sustainable American city for 2007. Portland won top spot out of 50 cities in the nation, followed by San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago, with Oakland rounding out the top five. At the bottom of the list were Virginia Beach, Oklahoma City, and Columbus, Ohio. Cities were ranked for sustainability based on public transit, air quality, land use, recycling, local food, green building, and a variety of other measures. Portland's eco-quality of life stems from a commitment to public transit, access to locally grown food, bicycle commuting, green buildings, and an urban wellness organization known as City Repair. Now that we have a national standard, cities will surely want to join the friendly competition to improve their "Green City" rankings.    --Brian Smith
