Titan Cement

In Brief: The information on this page is presented in conjunction with Earthjustice's new comprehensive report on mercury pollution from cement kilns.

Location: Wilmington, SC

Reported 2006 Emissions (in lbs.): Data Pending

Mercury Input for 2006 (in lbs.): Data Pending

Titan Cement is proposing the construction of the first cement plant in North Carolina in Wilmington, despite local citizen opposition.  If built, it would be the fourth-largest cement plant in the US.  Wilmington sits on the Cape Fear River, a popular tourist spot, and near the Atlantic Ocean, where there are already warnings in place to limit fish due to mercury contamination.

I live near this site (it's actually Castle Hayne, NC, about 5 miles outside Wilmington). Aside from what is said here, other discerning facts found in Titan's air permit for this cement plant: 1) 263 lbs. of mercury (will be the 5th largest source of mercury emissions in our state); 10th highest emitting cement plant in the US. 2) Will make our county (New Hanover County), # 1 in the state for counties with highest mercury emissions. 3) If built, 5000 children will attend school within 5 miles of this cement plant. 4) the stretch of river (Cape Fear River) where this plant will be located is already impaired for mercury and we have one of the nations highest known levels of mercury ever recorded from humans-----just 30 miles from this site. And Titan has hired an expert to tell our community that mercury isn't really so bad..in fact, according to their recent full-page ad, even oxygen is fatal if too much is consumed. Stoptitan.org has formed to stop this plant. check out our site and help support our efforts to keep this high-mercury emitting industry out of our community.
