About e.Brief's Banner

This month's e.Brief banner is an aerial view of downtown Seattle, and comes from an Earthjustice video featuring two Seattle-area cement kilns.

The video is one in a series at Earthjustice's Cleaning Up Mercury, Protecting Our Health campaign, exploring areas surrounding cement kilns and the effects that kiln mercury emissions have on the communities around them.

EPA logo.Major EPA Ruling on Greenhouse GasesThe EPA has proposed to formally find that carbon dioxide and five other heat-trapping gases are pollutants that endanger public health and welfare, and that emissions from new motor vehicles are contributing to the problem. The proposal sets the stage for the administration to regulate emissions of these global warming gases. The EPA reported the science supporting the proposed finding was "compelling and overwhelming." If finalized, the finding will require adoption of rules to limit the huge volumes of global warming pollution coming from cars and trucks.

"No Be Lolo: Restore Streamflow" is the campaign motto for communities working to restore the legendary "Four Waters" of Waihe`e River and Waiehu, `Iao, and Waikapu Streams of Maui. This campaign took a significant step forward recently when Hawai`i's Commission on Water Resource Management issued a proposed ruling that would restore flow to four major streams, returning water hoarded by big plantation landowners.

Photo of the Sunflower power plant.Coal Veto Fight Looms in KansasWith continuing support from Earthjustice, Kansas Gov. Photo of Smoky Canyon.Phosphate Mine Stalled Near YellowstoneA federal appeals court has temporarily halted the expansion of a phosphate mine in southeastern Idaho that has already caused widespread water pollution and would destroy a roadless area. The announcement follows a successful Earthjustice effort to block construction of what would have been a massive coal fired power plant in roughly the same area.
