The Death of Hoppy

We've received many letters from our website readers about "Hoppy" (aka Wolf 253M), one of the first wolves killed when these magnificent animals were removed from the Endangered Species List on March 28.

Here's a sampling of what our readers have to say:

I just today learned the tragic news of "Hoppy" and his other Yellowstone wolf companions. I am an avid TV/Cable news watcher and I cannot believe that not one station ran this story. I am mortified and shocked at the decision to lift the decades-old hunting ban on wolves. What are they thinking? I've read that they will allow all but 300 wolves to be killed. WHAT!!!??!!! First of all even ONE murdered wolf is a travesty, this number is beyond comprehension. How do they propose to keep track of the number killed so they can stop at 300??

Sometimes I feel like I'm living in a backwards, unfeeling, unthinking country. We have got to stop this from happening. The fact that on the 1st day the ban was lifted the best known and most recognized wolf of Yellowstone was killed is an omen... a very bad omen. Besides a donation, the pending lawsuit and writing/emailing the "decision makers," WHAT CAN I DO???
— Laura S.

Earthjustice responds: Earthjustice attorneys filed our lawsuit opposing the de-listing of wolves on April 28. We encourage you to write letters to your local newspapers and your elected officials.

I had tears reading about "Hoppy." I thank you so much for fighting this greedy, heartless and myopic government. I hope to be able to help more in the future. You represent all that is still good about this "great nation" of ours.
— Anthony P.

"Hoppy" - what an awesomely beautiful animal... I sent this story to Congresswoman Betty Sutton -- this has got to stop! Our government is run by idiots fueled by greed. Please save our icons of the American wildlife -- before they become like the dodo.

I am a supporter of Earthjustice. I guess I'm quite upset with the people who decided to re-introduce wolves into the environment, knowing full-well that people just don't feel safe having wolves around. These poor creatures now must become subject to more trappings and violence and brutal deaths. I feel sorry that people just don't learn that certain things don't change; now these poor wolves and their cubs must suffer just because a few people got together and decided that we needed to re-introduce wolves into the area.

I guess someone should have spoken to the people of those states first.

How terrible.

The piece about "Hoppy" the grey wolf killed after his species was delisted brought me to tears. I lived in Montana up until recently, and had the privilege of seeing these beautiful creatures at Yellowstone firsthand. Thank you so much for sharing his story with your readers. It just confirms to me once again why the fight for the environment and for the precious species that inhabit it is so vitally important.
— Hillary E.

I feel sick… I bristle every time I get these emails, but I need to read them anyway.

I am sad, and I am crying. I have lost ALL respect for people in government.
