Wetlands and Streams Protected
In Brief: Army Corps of Engineers nationwide permits protected by federal court.
On November 26, 2003, a federal court rejected industry attempts to weaken nationwide dredge-and-fill permits for development projects, mining, and other environmentally damaging activities. Conservationists are concerned that these permits are already too weak, allowing overly broad blanket authorization to damage and destroy our precious streams and wetlands. Industry's suit tried to make the permits even weaker, arguing that a broader array of damaging activities should be allowed to go forward without project-by-project approval. The district court dismissed industry's suit. However, industry has appealed, so the controversy continues.
